Technorati Unleashes Realtime Microformat Search

Posted by kevin Fri, 09 Jun 2006 06:13:46 GMT

Technorati unleashes the first of a kind realtime microformats search engine! Check it out Pretty nifty work in the Kitchen…

My thoughts- for many of you who may not be so up to date on this- Microformats is an attempt to adapt to current behaviors and usage patterns and offer better ways for say blogs to be structured. Think about it this way- their is a lot of data such as text going on right?

think about it- myspace type sites, blogs, forum discussions, groups… when we designed the genesis engine and its applications we spent a long time thinking ahead…. on how the information is not only presented but packaged for search is important.

This is taken from microformats.org

Microformats are designed around the way humans use em. (Source)

  1. RSS for simple syndication (though the jury is still out on its progeny, especially Atom, which seems to get more complicated as it goes through committee despite fine leadership).
  2. xfn for human relationships (using the rel attribute; note that using rel is also an easy way to extend Creative Commons metadata).
  3. GeoURL for location (using simple tags).
  4. hCalendar for calendar events (mapping the commonly used iCalendar format to XHTML).
  5. hCard for address books (mapping the commonly used vCard format to XHTML).
  6. XOXO for outlines and blogroll-like subscriptions.
  7. Attention.XML for keeping track of what you’ve read, what you’re spending time on, and what you should be paying attention to.

pf_logo Prometheus Fire is Pandora Squared’s developement group. They are hard hard at work on The Leviticus Project, which will be our work on lower-case semantic web which is:

  • simple semantics with microformats o don’t try to “define the world” o small pieces loosely joined
  • evolutionary not revolutionary o add semantics to today’s web o rather than create a future web (STOP WEB 2.0)
  • user centric design o humans first, machines second o “people are helping to create metadata” – david sifry

semantic (x)html example: social software

  • xhtml friends network (xfn)
  • xfn built with xhtml meta data profile o http://gmpg.org/xmdp/
  • simple way to define new “rel” values
  • also new meta property names and values
  • reuse semantic (x)html to define more semantics
