###I am a thirty something entrepreneur who fled the dot com crash from the SF Bay to the land of Coopers Sparkling Ale and warmer waters of the South Pacific. While I am no where near the expert on Australian Technology, (that Award must go to folks like Mark Jones of the Financial Review, and Frank Arrigo of Microsoft Australia) I thought it would be fun and interesting to throw my thoughts on 2005.###

According to the Age, Australia closed $150AU Billion ($110US) worth of new deals in 2005.
Peoplesoft: finally lost to Oracle…
Tsunami: Australian citizens and technology companies move swiftly to help in a severe time of need. Simply the worst natural disaster in over 100 years and by February Australia led the region in help and donations. By February first 2005 just two short months after the tragedy the Australian public donated $240million to tsunami appeals. (Compared with $386million in donations overseas aid agencies received to help the poor across the world in 2003.) Australian based Asian Pacific Internet Company Owner of Malaysia.net and Indonesia.net offer online communities support for those in affected areas and raised funds for the UN and Red Cross Red Crescent relief efforts.

The PodCast Network: Before the word Podcast was a gleam in Father iTunes eye, The Podcast Network Begins: On the 14th of February 2005, Australia’s Super Geeks co-founders Mick Stanic and Cameron Reilly started providing the podcast listening community with one central location from which to subscribe to the best content available. TPN announce a few months later a very sexy deal with Motorola.

Web Two Point 0H! Gains popularity only it is like a personal Jesus, its something personal and special for everyone only no one can fully describe it.
Hill and Knowlton a PR agency surprise the hell out of me with Breakfast bytes, and a panel on blogging. Arguably the pivitol event for my technology network in Australia.
CeBit Australia 2005 is focused on VoIP, Broadband Switching and mobile networking technologies.

Not baked clay bricks, Adobe buys Flash and promises to not to make users watch the Flash intro when downloading the newest non crashing version of Acrobat.

Blogtalk downunder: In May of 2005 Australia held its first Social Software Conference and drew international attention with speakers such as Thomas Burg • Mark Bernstein • Rebecca Blood and many other respected authorities on blogging, media and social software.

Alpha Magazine: Australia’s number one sport magazine launches and News Corporations first blog site. They spent $7 million on advertising to announce the magazine, and none of that really great advertising had the site URL or any mention of other mediums. I think it’s a really good magazine for two bucks it should be around $7.00

Linkme: A combination attempt from Andrew Banks and Sensis attempts to take linkedin head on. Previously VP of Paypal, Linkedin CEO Reid Hoffman who has closed over $15 million in VC cash isn’t too worried.
Vista: Microsoft announces Bob…oops I mean Vista the new version of Windows that won’t have a blue screen of death, in this release the screen will be pink reflecting a more open Web 2.0 type of Microsoft.
Fairfax buys local online dating site RSVP for $38.92 Million AU. Executives get first choice of talent pool…
News Corp. gives Myspace $580 Million, Tom is no longer on everyone’s friend list.

Yahoo and 7 Announce huge media partnership deal. The deal even though resulting in a partnership half the size of 9MSN is a direct threat. Microsoft threatens to upgrade 7Yahoo to Windows Live.
Kazaa: Tired of playing with pre Web 1.0 media companies and their evil legal representatives in court, Kazaa decides to simply shut down access in Australia. Surprisingly the CEO of the Stephen Peach, chief executive of the Australian Record Industry Association, criticized the move he was mad at him Nemesis saying “They don’t have the right to withdraw who am I going to kick around now?�
AirReview Their Second Year and explodign AirReview is the leading online resource for financial news. According to the www.aireview.com.au Macquarie announces that Online Ad Sales Revenue exceeds all other advertising mediums. PBL, NEWS and Fairfax move to increase their online real estate.
Wolf Creek: Decent horror flick released with a really bad flash site.
Kerry Packer Australian Media legend founder of PBL parent to Seek.com.au and other Australian Web Powerhouses passes away.
